The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

Everton: The team head to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
